The plainly collegiate Beat Happening had the temerity to call themselves punks; that took a little nerve in the mid-eighties underground, which favoured the loud, the aggressive, the noisy. But having a little nerve, they felt, was what punk was all about. … As it turned out, Beat Happening and K [Records] were a major force in widening the idea of a punk rocker from a mohawked guy in a motorcycle jacket to a nerdy girl in a cardigan.
